For Children of Deceased Railroad Workers (U.S.)

If your railroad-working parent has passed, critical support is available through the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) and related survivor benefit programs:

Survivor Monthly Benefits are payable to eligible children, spouses, divorced spouses, parents, and even grandchildren, provided the deceased employee was “insured” under the Railroad Retirement Act at time of death (10+ years of service or 5+ years post‑1995, plus a recent railroad connection) .

Child Benefits: Unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if in school), disabled children under 22, and dependent grandchildren (if parents are deceased/disabled) qualify .

Parents who relied on the employee for 50%+ of their support, aged 60 or older, may also qualify .

Lump-Sum Death Benefits may apply if no monthly annuity is payable — requirements vary, with amounts typically ranging from several hundred to over a thousand dollars .

Applying for Benefits: Call the RRB toll-free at 1-877-772-5772 or visit your local RRB field office.

If you’re a child, grandchild, or parent of a deceased railroad employee, the RRB offers critical financial assistance—monthly survivor benefits or lump‑sum payments—to help support your family. You can qualify if your loved one met service requirements, and applying is as easy as calling 1‑877‑772‑5772 or visiting an RRB field office.
